Fit & measuring before you buy
Each manufacturer publishes its own size chart tied to its own harness pattern. The Ruffwear Front Range medium is built around a ribcage girth of about 27–32 inches; the Blue-9 Balance M/L is built around about 24–35.5 inches. Those ranges overlap but describe two different harness shapes, so a dog measuring the same number of inches can still fit one brand's medium and need a different size in another.
Follow the selected manufacturer's measurements, including front-chest width where required. Edmonton Humane Society advises checking for rubbing and changes to your dog's movement once the harness is fitted. A familiar size letter is not a substitute for those checks.
A front ring can let a leash tangle at a dog's feet during turns; a back ring tends to suit a calmer walking style. Neither attachment point has been independently tested on this site for escape resistance, car-safety use or all-day comfort.

Does a front-clip harness stop a dog from pulling?
